With a career spanning over four decades, jazz flutist Ali Ryerson consistently ranks among the top flutists in the Downbeat Jazz Poll. Born in 1952 in New York City, Ali grew up in a musical family. Her father, Art Ryerson, was a renowned jazz guitarist who got his start with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, and later became one of the first-call studio players in NYC for five decades, recording with everyone from Louis Armstrong to Charlie Parker to Elvis Presley.
Ali Ryerson has carried on the family tradition, becoming an international touring/recording artist, with performances ranging from Carnegie Hall to the Blue Note to festival appearances worldwide. Ryerson has released nearly two-dozen albums as leader or co-leader on major jazz labels such as Concord Records, DMP, Capri, and legendary jazz producer Bob Thiele’s Red Baron. She has recorded and performed with jazz greats such as Stephane Grappelli, Red Rodney, Roy Haynes, Hubert Laws, Art Farmer, Kenny Barron, Frank Wess, and Joe Beck, as well as classical artists Julius Baker, Luciano Pavarotti (while principal flutist with the Monterey Bay Orchestra), and harpsichord master Anthony Newman. Ali was musical director of the Hudson River Regional Jazz Festival (2001-’04), Jazz chair of the National Flute Association (2005-’10), Low Flutes Chair of NFA (current) and founder of the NFA Jazz Flute Big Band.
As an educator/author, Ryerson published her widely acclaimed Jazz Flute Practice Method book in ’09, and has written numerous instructional articles for The Flutist Quarterly, Downbeat Magazine, and Flute Talk, among others. Ms. Ryerson recently joined the faculty at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield CT as flute professor, and continues to conduct master classes worldwide, including her week-long annual master class held at Hidden Valley Music Seminars in California. Ms. Ryerson has been on the faculty of the Litchfield Jazz Camp, the IJAM JAZZ summer camp in Italy, is a visiting faculty member at The Jazzschool in Berkeley, CA and a visiting artist-in-residence at universities throughout the US and abroad. She currently teaches an online master class series through LessonFace in NYC. As a composer, Ali has received numerous commissions for flute ensembles. Ms. Ryerson studied flute with Harold Bennett (NY Metropolitan Orch.) and John Wion (NYC Opera Orch.), and performed at numerous Julius Baker master classes (NY Philharmonic). Ryerson is a graduate of the Hartt School of Music of the University of Hartford.
A Gemeinhardt Artist with an Autograph Series of flutes she helped design, Ali’s pet project for the past 12 years has been developing her Jazz Flute Big Band, a unique jazz ensemble made up entirely of flutes, ranging from piccolo to contrabass, with a full rhythm section, performing arrangements by some of today’s top jazz arrangers, all commissioned by Ryerson for the JFBB. Their debut CD release, Game Changer – The Ali Ryerson Jazz Flute Big Band (Capri Records ‘13), remained in the TOP 10 on the US Jazz Charts for six straight weeks.

Performing Artist and Professor of Flute
Altus Artist George Pope has taught flute at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory since 2002 and is the Emeritus Professor of Flute at the University of Akron, on the faculty from 1978-2013. His solo and chamber music performances throughout the United States, Europe and South America have been universally acclaimed. Fanfare Magazine calls George Pope’s playing “clean, interestingly vigorous and beautiful”. His Ohio premiere of the Christopher Rouse Concerto for Flute and Orchestra was hailed for its “eloquent narrative voice” and “magnificent force”. George Pope was Principal and Solo Flute of the Akron Symphony Orchestra from 1978-2002, and is currently Principal Flute of the Blossom Festival Orchestra. He has also performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Ohio Ballet Orchestra, the Cleveland Philharmonic, the Canton Symphony Orchestra, the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera Cleveland, the Tulsa Philharmonic, the New Mexico Symphony, the Monteux Festival Orchestra and the Brevard Music Center Orchestra.
A graduate of Northwestern University and The University of Tulsa, George Pope studied with Marion McNally, Maurice Sharp, Walfrid Kujala, Bernard Goldberg, William Bennett and Geoffrey Gilbert. He is a founding member of the SOLARIS Wind Quintet, in residence at The University of Akron. Solaris released its first CD, “American Quintets”, on Capstone Records in August of 2000, which includes his transcription of Bernstein’s “Anniversaries” for woodwind quintet. Solaris’ second Capstone CD, “American Quintets II”, was released in August 2003. Solaris released it’s recording of 5 quintets by Alec Wilder on Crystal Records in August of 2014. George Pope can also be heard on Opus One Records and with the Akron Symphony on Telarc. He is a founding member of The Chamber Music Society of Ohio, and joined the Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival in 2008. He has performed with The Coryton Trio, Furious Band and the Garth Newel Chamber Players in Hot Springs, Virginia.
His master classes throughout the country and the Summer Flute Experience in Akron have firmly established his reputation as a motivational and highly successful teacher. He has appeared as the featured artist in many master classes and festivals, including the Texas Flute Society, the Upper Midwest Flute Association in Minneapolis, the Florida Flute Association, the Central Ohio Flute Association, the Northeastern Ohio Flute Association, the Greater Cleveland Flute Society, the Oklahoma Flute Society, the Arizona Flute Society, the Middle Tennessee Flute Association, the Northwest Flute Collegium in Tacoma, the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, and the German Flute Society in Frankfurt. George Pope has published transcriptions and arrangements through ALRY Publications, etc.
George Pope is active in The National Flute Association, serving in the Presidential cycle (2000-03), Program Chair for the 2000 Convention in Columbus, OH, and as a member of the Board of Directors (1995-97).
